Friesland Campina

FrieslandCampina is a multinational dairy company, owned by 15,000 members-farms, that exports to more than 100 countries with a total turnover of more than 8 billion Euros.

Fairfood and Friesland Campina
Fairfood International first approached FrieslandCampina with various questions about the level of sustainability of their brand products. Over time FrieslandCampina became more transparent and responsive towards Fairfood International’s efforts. In 2008 and 2009, Fairfood International helped FrieslandCampina gain a deeper insight into the production side of the ingredients used in their supply chain, through audits on some of their suppliers by a partner organisation of Fairfood International. In 2009, at a meeting with Fairfood International, FrieslandCampina stated their objective to increase the use of sustainable soy, also through being a member of the Round Table on Responsible Soy.

Current status
The constructive discussion with FrieslandCampina is still ongoing. Recently, FrieslandCampina updated Fairfood International on the soy used to feed the cattle that provide the milk for their brand products sold in certain countries. In addition, they described their target for sustainable soy, and their actions towards checking their suppliers for social compliance issues. Fairfood International commends FrieslandCampina’s progress and will continue to follow up on their actions, at the same time encouraging them to increase the scope of their sustainability targets in order to cover more of the countries that they are active in.
